Young programmers competed during the second edition of Code Quest in PZL Mielec

Mielec, April 29, 2019 – 49 high-school students visited Polskie Zaklady Lotnicze Sp. z o.o. in Mielec to compete in the Lockheed Martin corporate’s Code Quest computer programming competition.

"The opportunity to promote science among young people is an investment in the future," said Janusz Zakręcki, President and General Director, PZL Mielec. "Programming is already a key branch of the global economy, which will have an impact on the qualified staff working in the aviation industry. That is why another educational initiative in which we as a company engage is extremely important "- he added.

The Code Quest competition took place in PZL Mielec for the second time. In relation to the first competition, which took place in October 2018, the number of participants increased more than tripled. This time, we had 17 teams, that is 49 students from 10 secondary schools, not only from Mielec, but also from Dębica, Tarnów, Kolbuszowa, Połaniec, Leżajsk and Radomyśl Wielki. Young programmers worked in groups and solved tasks prepared by engineers and programmers from Lockheed Martin.

The competition has been organized since 2012 in all Lockheed Martin locations around the world. Its aim is to inspire young people to become interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM - acronym from the words Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics as common fields of teaching).

“Lockheed Martin recognizes that we play an important role in helping to develop a workforce with the skills to compete in a 21st century high-tech economy,” said Chief Information Officer Jim Connelly. “Over the next 15 years, we’ll need to hire thousands of new STEM professionals, so we have a vested interest in engaging talented young people in exciting, fulfilling technology careers.”

This year's winner was the team from the Second School No. 3 in Tarnów. The next Code Quest campaign will take place in April 2020.
